Wisdom’s first reaction to the deliberate choice of folly is one of derision: “I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh” (Proverbs 1:26).
The people who forged the Soviet Union, who so wholeheartedly embraced atheistic communism and promoted the Bolshevik revolution, hated God. Zinoviev, friend and colleague of Lenin, most blatantly expressed the attitude of the Soviet Union toward God: “We shall grapple with the Lord God in due season, we shall vanquish Him from His highest heaven, and wherever He seeks refuge, and we shall subdue Him forever.”
God responded, “Is that so?” His derisive answer is found in Psalm 2:4: “He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision.” Seventy-five years later the mighty Soviet Union and its unhappy satellites stood before the world in economic, social, and ethnic disarray. Wisdom mocks at the abysmal folly of people who embrace such philosophies, while she weeps over the inconceivable misery, hardship, and suffering of their victims.
