“Who Does This Guy Think He Is?”

Mark 2:1-20. Who does this guy think he is? I love this first story of Mark 2. Jesus is teaching in a house filled with scribes. Four guys bring their friend, but, unable to gain entrance, let him down through the roof.
The guy is lying there before Jesus and Jesus tells him “Your sins are forgiven.” Everyone in the room thinks, “Who does this guy think he is? Only God can forgive sins!” Of course they were right, only God can forgive sins, and to prove that He has the authority to do so, He tells the guy “Get up, and go home.” The man immediately does so! In the next story Jesus is hanging out with some riffraff. Drunks, tax collectors, and sinners. Again the scribes and the Pharisees ask, “How is it that he eats with these people?” They are confused and perplexed at the person of Jesus. “Who is this guy, that tells people their sins are forgiven, heals them, and yet eats with sinners? Who was He? He was God.
He was God, who is holy, just, and righteous. He was God, a God of love, grace and mercy. Who was He? He was a doctor, who had come to make us whole, who would, by his own stripes, bring healing to us.
